Funding Initiative
The Alabama Celtic Association uses proceeds from fundraising events, newsletter subscriptions, grant monies and additional resources, to assist projects that support and encourage Celtic Arts growth and awareness in the State of Alabama. We are always looking for worthwhile projects that need our support.

Fiddle Workshop
$300 Grant for Fiddle Workshop with
Martin Hayes (and Dennis Cahill) at
Homewood Musical Instruments in October
attracts students from Alabama and
neighboring states.
Highland Dance Scholarship
Scholarship for Alabama Dancer Erin
HIgginbotham to attend National Scottish
Dance Championships in Denver in

2003
Celtic Music / City Stages
$1000 Grant to Alabama Sampler Stage
at City Stages 2003 (Alabama Sampler
stage featured several Celtic bands and
dancers throughout the day on Sunday)
Irish Dance Workshops
$250 Grant to Birmingham School of Celtic
Arts for two Irish Dance Workshops
at Children's Dance Foundation with Mary
Moran TRCG from Nashville
WBHM Public Radio - Central AL
$300 Grant to WBHM Public Radio to
underwrite "The Thistle and Shamrock",
NPR's nationally syndicated Celtic Music
progamming
2004
Celtic Music Society of Montgomery
ACA receives $3600 Grant from the
Alabama State Council on the Arts -
to be used by the Celtic Music Society of
Montgomery to enhance Celtic arts and
awareness in the Montgomery area.
Birmingham International Festival
$500 Grant awarded to the Birmingham
International Festival to bring Celtic Arts
Education to rural schools in surrounding
counties and inner-city schools.
WBHM Public Radio - Central AL
ACA continues Grant to WBHM Public Radio
for "The Thistle and Shamrock" Celtic
music programming in Birmingham
and Gadsden markets.
2005
WUAL Public Radio - West Alabama
ACA begins underwriting for The Thistle
and Shamrock Celtic music programming
on WUAL Public Radio broadcasting in
Tuscaloosa and West Alabama. Part of the
Weekend Music Partners Program.
Birmingham Southern College
$500 Grant to Birmingham Southern College
to present Celtic music and dance classes
and performance as part of BSC Cultural
Diversity Week in February 2005.
Tennessee Valley Scottish Society
$250 Grant to the Tennessee Valley
Scottish Society to support a Living
History presentation by the Pre-1840
Historical Society at the annual North
Alabama Scottish Games and
Festival in June.
Shoals Celtic Concerts
$250 presentation grant to the Shoals
Celtic Concert Series to assist in the
presentation of guest artist, Jim Malcolm,
winner of the Scottish Traditional Music
Award in 2004.
2006
Scottish Drumming Workshop
ACA grant of $150 for a 7-hour, in-house
clinic with Micheal Paige, Drum sergeant of
Duncan McCall Pipe Band (Pensacola, FL)
for the Heritage Pipes & Drums drum
corps. The clinic was held at the Trinity
Presbyterian Church in Vestavia Hills.
Alabama Public Television
ACA underwrites three months of Scottish
programming on APT beginning in February
style program is produced in Scotland,
featuring fascinating facts and information
on a major part of America's Scottish heritage.
The $2000 grant from the Alabama Celtic
Association isthe largest single direct grant
to date.
ACA Honors
The Alabama Celtic Association offered four
Grants to Alabama Celtic Artists. Kate
Weatherly (Irish Dance - University of Limerick),
Russell Hopper (Irish Fiddle - University of
Limerick), Scott Miller (Irish Flute - All Ireland
Competition) and Rick Cunningham (Mandolin -
All Ireland Competition) received stipends to
assist their education/travel as outstanding
ambassadors of Alabama's Celtic arts community.
2007
Kevin Burke Fiddle Workshop
and Performance
ACA underwrites a workshop and performance
with Irish fiddle master, Kevin Burke. The
workshop at Children's Dance Foundation
was full of Alabama fiddlers from Mobile to
Huntsville. Kevin Burke paired with Cal Scott
and Jamie Laval & Ashley Broder for a concert
that evening at the B'ham Botanical Gardens.
Irish Dance Clinic Weekend in
B'ham with Colin Dunne
ACA approves a support grant to the
Birmingham School of Celtic Arts to bring
Master Irish Dancer, Colin Dunne to Bham
for a weekend long clinic at Children's Dance
Foundation. The clinic hosts 30 students for
across the state.
EUSPBA Piping Competition
Funding for a Piping Competition sanctioned
by EUSPBA (Eastern United States Pipe Band
Association) was approved by ACA. The solo piping
competition was hosted by Ross Bridge Resort
in November 2007 and welcomed 23 pipers from
across the U.S.
