Greetings everyone! Hope you all had a great summer.
With school back in session the ACA is shifting it's focus to the Birmingham International Centers "Spotlight on Ireland". Friends of ACA and the crew at the Birmingham International Center (BIC) have been working over the summer to write grants, raise money, and make connections to help make this one of the best spotlights ever! On top of that, the International Center will be celebrating their 60th year this year...get ready to have some great fun!
To kick things off, BIC and the ACA are pleased to welcome several very important guests to Birmingham beginning September 17th. Paddy OBrien (http://www.chulrua.com)
and Pat Egan will be in Birmingham for three days as part of a "unique techniques" workshop offered to area teachers and interested parties. These workshops will offer attendees an opportunity to learn about Irish music and song from two very prominent artists. Friday evening the 18th, the Birmingham International Center will be the site of a reception for Mr. Martin Rouine who is the Consul General of Ireland. Mr. Rouine will be in Alabama to visit with area leaders and members of the Spotlight on Ireland committee. The reception will begin at 5:30. Immediately following the reception, Paddy O'Brien and Pat Egan will present a concert at the center. Tickets for the reception and concert are $25 and are available at www.bic-al.org Tickets for the concert only are $15 and are also available at the website.
Saturday evening September 19th is the annual "Halfway to St.Patricks Day" party with Birmingham's own Jasper Coal. This years event is being held as a fundraiser for the Birmingham Chapter of the Ancient Order of Hibernians. The event will be held at Rogues Tavern. Stay tuned for more info.
The Birmingham International Center will be offering Irish Gaelic classes this fall. Classes begin in late September. For more information go to the International Center's website www.bic-al.org
